As a Certified Boobologist, I have seen just about every size, shape or fit ‘issue’ there is… The following tips are guidelines to follow when reassessing your bra wardrobe or when the time is right for a bra overhaul!
The key elements to a perfect fit!! We do not use measuring tape and you won’t either with these simple bra fit tips!
A perfect fit will look like this:
THE BRA BAND - The bra band should be snug around your ribcage and hooked comfortably on the middle clasp. It should be parallel to the front of your bra and not able to budge. The front of your bra should NOT sit away from your body, especially when raising your arms.
THE CUP – Your breasts should sit perfectly within the cups - and depending on the style of the bra, the cups should cover your entire breast. For example, if you are wearing a push up bra – this shape generally pushes your breasts together and in this instance it is ok that the cup does not totally cover. If you are wearing a T-shirt bra – it is important that the cups cover the sides, as well as the top of your breasts – creating total coverage -this way, your bra will appear practically invisible – the key to a great fitting T-shirt bra.
THE STRAPS – The straps on your bra are ONLY to be used to bring your cups closer to your body – they are not there for support! You should never have to tighten your straps all the way in order to bring your breasts up to a higher level.
Bra issues and remedies
Band Issue #1
Your bra band is riding up the back:
This means your bra band size is TOO LARGE! This is the most common fit issue we see. When a band is too large it rides up, allowing your breasts to sag! Down a band size (or two) and UP a cup size! Tighten up gals!
Band Issue #2
Your breasts are falling out from under the front of the bra – or the bra is standing away from your body and not laying flat and snug:
Again, this means your bra band size is TOO LARGE! Try going down a band size or two, but please make sure to increase (!!) the cup size, Remember: When increasing the band size, you increase the cup size by approximately a ½ inch. This being said, remember, even if the cup size is the same letter (i.e.: B, C, DD, F) this does not mean that it is the same cup size. A 32B is smaller in the cup than a 34B and so forth.
Cup issue
The band is snug but you are still popping out the top:
If your band size is in fact snug and parallel to the front of your bra – but your breasts are still not contained within the cup or you see ‘doubleboobing’ … keep the band size and keep going up cup sizes until it fits. (Don’t forget … we go up to a K cup!)
Strap Issue
The straps keep falling off your shoulders:
Your band size is too large! If your cup fits then remain in the cup size – but go down in your band size.
The one minute bra quiz!
Ladies … what is the biggest bra size problem? A band size that is too large and a cup size that is too small! How do we fix it? DOWN a band size and UP a cup size! (Keep going down until you are snug and keep going up until you are covered!)
